On the pilot watch market, Garmin has practically no competitors. Its D2 range currently has three models: the D2 Air X15 (entry, ~€639), the D2 Mach 2 (high-end, ~€1,340 to €1,480) and the brand new D2 Mach 2 Pro (April 2026), which adds inReach satellite messaging and 4G (~€1,530): the MARQ Aviator remaining the luxury option. All share the essentials on the aviation side; they are distinguished by the screen, maps, battery life and materials. Here is first the duel that concerns most pilots: Air X15 vs Mach 2.
To be completely honest: I do not wear these watches on a daily basis, what I say about them is based on manufacturer specifications and how pilots use them. I will add my personal opinion the day I adopt one. And above all: a pilot watch remains a backup, never a certified flight instrument, nor a replacement for a GPS/EFB.

And the brand new D2 Mach 2 Pro
Announced in April 2026, the D2 Mach 2 Pro takes the Mach 2 and adds inReach satellite messaging and SOS technology, out of network reach, as well as 4G/LTE connectivity. Price: ~$1,549.99 (≈ €1,529 at pilotshop.lu). It's the choice for flights in isolated areas (mountains, sea, bush), where being able to alert rescue services from your wrist has real value.
The pilot's take
What a pilot watch really changes is the glance at the wrist: the "direct-to" to the nearest field, the text weather of an aerodrome, the baro altitude, the flight log that fills itself in. It's a little situational awareness copilot, and an excellent connected watch for daily use.
But let's be clear, because this is where safety comes into play: datalink weather is strategic, never tactical. The radar image displayed is always older than its timestamp: the NTSB has shown that the displayed age can severely underestimate the real age; in one accident, the screen indicated "1 minute" while the image was actually 6 to 8 minutes old, and the total delay can reach 15 to 20 minutes. You never weave between cells on NEXRAD: you avoid them from afar, visually and with the on-board radar. The watch helps; it doesn't fly, and it doesn't replace your instruments, nor your preparation.
Good to know before buying
- • Subscription. Connected functions (weather, flight plan transfer) require the Garmin Pilot app, a recurring paid annual subscription (several plans) without which some of the functions are deactivated; check the current rate in your area before buying. The Android version is more limited than on iPhone/iPad (no Jeppesen / FltPlan integrations, slower updates).
- • Battery life in flight. The "10 / 26 days" are announced in watch mode. With active GPS and screen on, battery life drops significantly; charge before a long flight.
- • No independent autonomy. The watch has neither a weather receiver nor an independent ADS-B: without a connected phone/avionics (or a dead battery), this info disappears.
- • A backup, not a replacement. Does not replace a real GPS/EFB, nor the flight instruments. You don't fly with your eyes glued to your wrist (outside visual watch takes precedence), and the synthetic attitude/HSI of a watch does not authorize you to go above a layer nor to fly in instrument conditions without rating or certified flight instruments. The SpO2 sensor is not a medical device.
Who is it for?
- PPL / leisure / VFR: the D2 Air X15 covers the essentials (direct-to, text weather, flight log) at half the price. The smart choice to start.
- On-board maps & battery life: the D2 Mach 2 for color maps + NEXRAD, sapphire crystal, titanium and battery life.
- Flights in isolated areas: the D2 Mach 2 Pro for SOS and satellite messaging (inReach) off-grid.
- Daily use: all three are excellent connected watches: aviation as a bonus.
So, which one?
For the majority of pilots, the D2 Air X15 is more than enough: it does everything that really matters, at half the price. You upgrade to the Mach 2 for on-board maps, NEXRAD, sapphire crystal and battery life; to the Mach 2 Pro if you fly far from everything and want satellite SOS.
Note, to be honest: the aviation watch universe is almost a Garmin monopoly. If you are not aiming for these dedicated functions, an Apple Watch or a Wear OS watch with an aeronautical application already does a lot, for much less money.

What you can and cannot find on Amazon. The D2 Mach 2 is not distributed there. You can find the D2 Mach 1, the generation that precedes it, and the D2 Air X15. The Mach 1 remains a real aviator's watch and is often found much cheaper than the Mach 2: it is in this capacity that I point it out, not as its equivalent.
